The History of WIIA

The West Irving Improvement Association (WIIA) was established in 1964 to address the need for basic community services (water, electricity, etc.) in the community known as Bear Creek. Founded by former slaves, Bear Creek is one of the oldest black communities in North Texas.

Our mission is to promote unity and encourage involvement in programs and activities that further the betterment of the African American community, to inform the community of pertinent issues and events, to assist in organizing effective, timely responses and to pursue avenues that meet the needs within the community. These objectives shall be accomplished through inclusive membership representation, broad outreach programs and collaboration with governmental, civic and other community organizations.
